THE HERO WE DESERVE
Having a partner was one of the things that everyone in the police force sought out. It was all fun and games before there was someone else's life you were in charge of looking out for on dangerous calls. Saving someone was their job, protecting their partner was their obligation and their privilege. Nicholas had met his partner about a year and a half into his time with the department, some would say it was lucky to find that person so soon after he became an officer, but if they knew Emily, they might have thought otherwise. Nicholas was well-versed in girls with attitude problems. He'd been raised by one. The hard ass tomboy that tries to best any and every guy in her path, that was what he'd been up against. He'd known of her, heard things through the grapevine, but the meeting had been far different than what he'd expected. And even so, somehow in their time of working together, she'd become his backup, his right hand, and another pain in the ass woman that he had to deal with.
After a long day at work, boring as usual and after dropping Chloe at home to finish the projects he'd been trying to keep her from, Emily had talked him into going to the bar. Nick was not smooth when it came to picking up girls, but sometimes his genuine smile and not quite so cocky attitude (plus being a cop) got him somewhere. It also helped having a wingman. Wing woman? Person? Though more often than not, Em ended up taking someone home while Nick went back to his apartment to face the shit his roommate gave him. He pulled the collar of his jacket closer around his neck out of minor discomfort from the sizable crowd and looked for his no doubt popular friend.
Nick spotted her at the bar, a few different people around her and he rolled his eyes before wading through the waves of people. He finally made it to the only open spot beside her and tapped the bar, "Beer please," He called out to the bartender before giving her a side glance to not draw away any attention she was getting. He smirked, "I see it didn't take you very long to become the highlight of this place. Did you flash your badge or perhaps something else?" Nick gave the bartender a nod and started a tab when she set the beer in front of him. "How many in are you?How much catching up do I have?" He laughed.
